“Barnard Elementary School is delighted to partner with The Heart of America Foundation to bring exciting books and reading materials to our students. Barnard is a Title 1 Elementary School serving pre-school through grade 5 students in a safe, nurturing, family friendly school environment. Our current enrollment of 580 students is predominately African American and Hispanic. Our commitment at Barnard is to have every child reading fluently and proficiently by the third grade. We welcome your assistance in helping us to achieve this goal!”

Barnard Elementary…

  • Is a Title 1 school that serves approximately 580 students in grades pre-school through fifth grade.
  • Is the first school in the District of Columbia Public Schools to receive the TEAM (Together Everyone Achieves More) Award for improved student achievement (2007-2008).
  • Is a Model PLT (Project Learning Tree) GreenSchool! where students engage in daily morning exercise, school gardening and school-wide recycling.
  • Has an outstanding, dedicated Principal! Dr. Reid was the recipient of the Principal of the Year Award from The Heart of America Foundation in 2011.

How Can You Help Barnard Elementary School?

This school’s supply needs:

  • You can help by donating school supplies such as pencils, markers and copy paper.
  • Barnard Elementary is also looking for student incentives such as stickers or subscriptions to various student magazines (e.g. National Geographic, Time for Kids).
  • Ready to help now? Click here to donate to The Heart of America Foundation to purchase new reading books for students at this school. Every $2.50 donated purchases a new book for a student.

  • Volunteer at Barnard Elementary by reading to the early childhood classes. Mentors/tutors are also needed for all grade levels.
