Tiny voices echo down a school hallway, “Thanks Capital One!” Excitement builds as these young students realize: today is the big day! Volunteers are hard at work throughout their school to create a special experience for these children. This familiar scene is unfolding as Capital One associates volunteer in schools and on projects across the country during this annual “One Week” national community service initiative, October 14-20, 2012. During One Week, Capital One associates engage in service activities benefiting the communities where they live and work. We’re honored that Capital One designated The Heart of America Foundation® as their signature partner during One Week 2012.

In collaboration with us at The Heart of America Foundation, Capital One associates will participate in several on-site projects across the US during One Week, including:

  • Leading five READesign® Library Makeover projects – Capital One associates will come together to transform five rundown school libraries into vibrant, stimulating centers of learning for communities in need (see map below),
  • Distributing “Kits for Kids” – 945 branches will distribute more than 33,175 financial literacy related books and activities,
  • Participating in “Read It Forward” – Card Operations will provide approximately 13,000 books for students who will pass their books on to other students,
  • Launching a new online campaign, Book by Book – Capital One associates and the general public will vote for their favorite children’s books online, resulting in a donation of up to 50,000 new books for students and schools in need. For every “like” Capital One receives on its Investing for Good Facebook page during the campaign, the company will donate a book to a child or library in need! Learn more about Capital One’s Book By Book campaign and to vote on your favorite children’s book titles at www.capitalone.com/bookbybook.

By the conclusion of the Book by Book campaign, Capital One volunteers will distribute over 117,500 books (valued in excess of $750,000) to more than 113,000 students.  Since 2001, Capital One has supported our Heart of America Foundation childhood literacy programs through financial support and associate volunteerism. Through this collaboration, we have distributed 1,160,794 books valued at $9.6 million to 479,150 students. And, since December 2006, 45 elementary schools and community organizations in Capital One communities have benefited from our READesign® Library Makeovers and Reading Corners. Plus, we are completing an additional seven projects before the end of the year!

For more than a decade, Capital One has invested in The Heart of America Foundation and the communities we serve. The return on that investment can be measured in millions of books and thousands of volunteer hours contributed for the good of the community. Working together, we have been able to inspire a love of reading in children across the country that will last a lifetime. Thank you, Capital One, for your valuable investment.
